Booster: Writing about our daily routines

What do we do every day, and how do we describe it? That was our topic for Booster this week. Today we reviewed some of the everyday activities that occupy us in the morning, afternoon, evening, and at night. We interviewed a partner about their day and practiced writing questions and answers about our daily routines.

Booster: The Places We Love

Even though we can't travel, we can still remember the places near and far that are special to us.

For this edition of Booster, everyone had to think of a place that they love and write down what it is and why it is special to them. Some of us also illustrated our descriptions.

Most of our favorite places are "relaxing." We learned how to properly write a sentence about things that relax us, or are relaxING :)

These places need not be a place we can get to easily ... sometimes a place that is special to us is already a place from our past that we might not be able to visit anymore. Or sometimes it is imaginary! Edo for example learned a new word for his favorite most fascinating place: a "shipwreck" under the sea!

Booster: What are your New Year's Dreams?

For our first Booster and English Workshop and Activity session of the New Year, we imagined and wrote down our goals and dreams for 2021.

I wonder what this boy is thinking as he looks at his calendar...

What are our hopes, dreams, wishes, and goals for the new year?

First, we discussed what New Year's Resolutions are. We don't really make those!

But there certainly are things we want more of in the year ahead.

We took time to draw the things we want more of in 2021, and then we presented and labelled our drawings. We will keep them as a reminder of what to keep in our lives throughout the year.

We decided we want:

    An end to Covid,

    More parties with our friends,

More time cooking with our parents,

A lot of us want to learn new recipes, like Tiramisu!

And of course, we want to travel the world again!

We want there to be peace in people's lives.

May all our wishes come true.

Booster: What can Astrology teach us about our personalities?

Today, we had a special teacher...

Pusheen the cat was our guide through the 12 constellations of the Zodiac!

Not only that, she taught us all about what each sign says about our personalities... in English!

Here is what we learned.

Everyone has a different Zodiac sign depending on their birthday. That is their sun sign, the place where the sun was positioned on the belt of the zodiac when they were born.

If you know anything about Pusheen, you know she loves to eat! She looks forward to her birthday cake all year long! What is Pusheen's Zodiac sign??

We learned the names of all the signs of the Zodiac in English, and also how to properly write and say dates in English too:

  • Stella’s birthday is August 11th. She is a Leo.

  • Anna’s birthday is November 11th. She is a Scorpio.

  • Giorgio’s birthday is September 17th. He is a Virgo.

  • Francesco’s birthday is September 2nd. He is Virgo. Francesco told us that the Big Dipper is also a constellation, but it is not in the Zodiac.

  • Vittoria’s birthday is August 6th. She is a Leo.

  • Esther’s birthday is July 3rd. She is a cancer.

  • Chiara’s birthday February 19th. She is an Aquarius.

  • Edoardo’s birthday is December 22nd. He is a Capricorn.

  • Andrea’s birthday is March 1st. He is a Pisces.

  • Berenice’s birthday is June 6th. She is a Gemini.

Anna is a Scorpio, but she is not sure if the Scorpio personality is really hers.

Giorgio says she is like a Scorpio without the stinger!

We decided Sherlock Holmes is probably a Scorpio... Scorpios make great detectives!

Edoardo thinks he is a hardworking Capricorn. But he doesn’t always mean business!

Andrea thinks he is somewhat a Pisces… but maybe not exactly.

Chiara made an excellent point: Chiara was born on the cusp of two signs, so she has the characteristics of both: Aquarius and Pisces.

Esther is a cancer. She thinks her personality is just like cancer, very caring and helpful!

How would you describe yourself?

I am…

I am always hungry! (like Pusheen!)

I am curious about the world.

I am chatty (I like to talk!)

I am friendly (I am open and like to make new friends)

I am shy. (I am quiet but that doesn’t mean I’m not friendly!)

I am generous; I like to share!

I am cautious… I like to stick to what I know, otherwise I’m skeptical!

I am courageous! A new challenge? I say bring it on!

I am adventurous… I like exploring new things, I am not afraid!

I am hardworking. I study and fulfill my responsibilities!

I am stubborn. I don’t like to change my mind.

I am content. In general, I am happy with my life.

The nine planets of the solar system are an important part of astrology, too. We learned the names of the planets in English, as well a trick for remembering them in order.

Booster: Let's "Spice Up" our English with some everyday phrases!

Today our goal was to spice up our writing with some fun phrases! Here a few that we learned:

To spice something up: to make something more interesting

Out with the old, in with the new.

You can't teach an old dog new tricks.

To peackock: to show off

To spill the beans! (or for the British: to spill the tea!) Tell me the story! or Tell the truch!

Don't be a one of the "sheeple! " Be yourself!

Our favorite phrase to use by far was ...

Piece of cake!

We said that some subjects in school are a piece of cake!

Like for Berenice, math and history are a piece of cake.

    For Francesco too, and Italian!

PE and math are a piece of cake for Chiara.

We also liked the phrase saved by bell.

The bell saved me from taking the test!

The professor asked me a difficult question, but I was saved by the bell!

Now we can peacock about with the new English phrases we've learned, but we will stay humble for now!

Booster: Writing About Celebrities

Today we put all of our knowledge of celebrities in action by answering some questions about fame and who we admire and writing down our thoughts. Here is what we came up with:

  • What makes someone a celebrity?

    • Giacomo likes famous athletes. His favorite team is Fiorentina. Soccer players are famous because they make goals. They must train very hard to become famous players.

    • Celebrities need to be good at something. They need to work hard to be good at something.

    •  Gordon Ramsey is a famous chef. He has a T.V. show, and yells a lot

  • Which celebrities do you admire? Why?

  • Anna’s favorite celebrity is Arianna Grande. She is a singer and an actress. She is an entertainer.

  • She is nice, and she sings very well. She is talented.

  • Daniel Radcliffe is also talented.

  • Sherlock Holmes is also talented, even though he is imaginary. He is a detective, AND he plays the violin!

  • We admire authors who write books. Some of our favorite books are Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Star Wars, the book.

Emma Watson is Vittoria’s favorite actress. She’s very good at acting. She is talented, too.L

Imagine I am your favorite celebrity.
Can you ask me about my life, and how I achieved success?

Imagine I am a football player.

    What is your training routine?

How about I am a singer, like Arianna Grande. What do you want to know about me?

What inspired you to become a singer.

What motivated you to adopt seven dogs!?

Would you like to be famous? For what?

  • Giorgio wants to be a YouTuber. He wants to be an expert on video games.

  • Anna would like to sing and dance on TikTok.

  • Stella would like to be a star volleyball player.

  • Esther wants to be a police officer… a famous one!

  • Edoardo doesn’t know what he wants to be… but he does want to be famous!

Finally we talked about some other kinds of celebrities, people who are famous because they really try to make the world a better place. Here are a few of our favorites:

Rafael Nadal won the French Open, but he is also very kind, thoughtful, and generous.
He started a charity to help people in need during the pandemic.

We definitely think Greta Thunberg is a celebrity! We like her message that "you are never too small to make a difference."

We have heard of Bill Gates before, but we didn't really know who he was. We learned that he is a leader and an innovator. You can become famous for inventing something useful!

Finally we learned about Christiane Amanpour. She is a journalist. Journalists bring us news from around the world and we can learn a lot from them. We liked her message, too: "I believe in being truthful, not neutral."
